13 of the top 15 global MedTech companies have facilities in Ireland and the sector employs over 25,000 people. Ireland hosts most of the world leaders and this acts as a magnet for other companies operating in the industry to bring their facilities to our shores.
There are now over 250 MedTech firms in Ireland, up from 50 firms 20 years ago. These firms account for €7.9b in Irish exports while 6 in 10 are also involved in R&D activity as well as manufacturing. Hollister has just announced a commitment of another €80m to its Ballina facility, Co, Mayo.
Ireland currently produces one third of the world’s contact lenses, half of the ventilators used in acute hospitals worldwide, defibrillators and pacemakers yet there is still room for expansion.
