Kilkenny County Council has proposed plans to Councillors to develop the former Smithwick’s site in the city centre bringing an estimated 500 jobs into the city in the financial services sector. The site was taken from Diageo by the Council for a fee reported to be around €2.1m.
The plans include a new park, a research centre for Waterford and Carlow IT and 180,000 square feet of office facilities including the refurbishment of the former brew house which is expected to be used for a financial services firm.
Councillors are to vote on the proposals next week but Kilkenny County Council are reported to have been in talks with six prospective firms which could create a further 500 jobs. The development is estimated to cost in the region of €33m and funding will have to be provided by Government to assist the project.
